General Questions
"What's the purpose of this site?"
PictureParking is all about sharing your pictures with others. The choice if up to you
if you would like to share your pictures with just your friends or if it's the
kind of picture you want the whole world to see.
"Will everybody be able to see my pictures?"
That choice is up to you. We provide two kinds of galleries (you can think of a gallery
as your digital photo album): private and public galleries. A private gallery is only
accessible for those persons which you invited. Nobody else will have access to it. A public
gallery on the contrary will be visible by the whole world, will show up randomly at the homepage
and will be browseable by everybody.
Since you can create an unlimited number of galleries and since you can invite people on a per-gallery basis you have the ultimate power to decide which picture can be seen by who. "What does it cost?"
PictureParking offers free accounts.
"How many pictures can I put online?"
You can put as many pictures online as you wish. The only limit is the 200 Mb barrier.
Depending on the size of your pictures, you can store as much pictures as you like. Average
picturesize online is about 200 Kb, so the 200 Mb could easily hold 1000 pictures.
"How is do you calculate the used serverspace?"
You can maximum use 200Mb on our webserver to host your pictures. We only calculate
the size of the pictures you uploaded. We automatically resize this uploaded picture, the
original picture, during your upload proces. You don't notice this, neither do you need to
do anything about it. The smaller pictures, which users see when browsing your pictures and
the thumbnails in the gallery-overview are NOT taken into account for your 200Mb barrier.
"If only the original image size counts,
why would I upload bigsize pictures?"
That choice is entirely up to you. When just browsing your pictures, users see a "medium sized" image
for viewing convenience. However, we provide a link to the "original" picture, which is the exact picture
as you uploaded it. By uploading a picture which has a high resolution and quality (and big filesize) you
make sure your visitors (like friends, family, ...) are able to print the image. When the original resolution
is too small, they won't be able to print a decent photo of it. The choice is up to you whether you want them to
have high quality pictures or not.
"Yeah sure, but what is a minimum resolution to upload if I want 'printable' pictures?"
A good printing resolution is 300dpi, 300 dots per inch that is. Every "dot" is a pixel.
So if you want your users to be able to print the regular photo size (11,4 cm x 15,2 cm or 4,5 "x 6"), you
will need to upload pictures of about 1500x1800 pixels. Minimum for an average quality photo
is 150dpi or an image resolution of 750x900 pixels for a regular photo.
"How do I promote my pictures/galleries?"
Uploading your pictures is just a start. If you would like people to see your
pictures, you may want to send the URL of your galleries to all your friends and
relatives.
All your galleries are available at http://www.pictureparking.com/user/username, where you need to replace "username" with your username. E.g. http://www.pictureparking.com/user/jsmith. "What if my question is not listed here?"
